la madama is one of the most loved and respected groups of spirits of the various courts or commissions in caribbean Hispanic espiritismo.  the madamas represent the female force, and wisdom within a family unit.   They are the matriarch, the eldest and wisest of the masters slaves, and were loved and respected by the family.

the madamas were the healers and the midwives.  they had a vast knowledge of herbalism and home remedies.
